Sumra Mahmood
CRIMINAL LAWYER
Sumra has substantial court experience as a criminal lawyer in Vancouver, in particular with Michael Bolton defending simple and complex criminal cases.
Involved at every stage of a trial or hearing, Sumra is driven by the defence counsel’s role of upholding the presumption of innocence and proof beyond a reasonable doubt—and the protection of individual rights. Hard-working and committed to her clients, Sumra conducts thorough investigations to uncover the strengths & weaknesses of every case.
Sumra began with Bolton Law as an articled student in 2017, was called to the British Columbia bar in 2018 and is practicing as an associate criminal lawyer. She has assisted in the management of various trial briefs, including drug offences, sexual assault, aggravated assault, drug trafficking, civil forfeiture, extradition and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act matters.
Prior to joining our team, Sumra articled at the Law Centre in Victoria, BC, where she gained court experience through remand appearances, managing her own trials, and making sentencing submissions to the court.
EDUCATION, MEMBERSHIPS & LANGUAGES
Sumra was called to the British Columbia Bar in 2018.
Sumra received her law degree from the University of Victoria in 2017. Before attending law school, she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Psychology at Simon Fraser University. Sumra participated in a summer school on International Criminal Law at Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies in The Hague.
At law school Sumra was actively involved as Research Assistant with the UVic Access to Justice Centre for Excellence, Clinician at the Law Centre, student clinic volunteer with Access Probono and Secretary of the Law Students’ Society.
In Vancouver she has volunteered with Pivot Legal Society, West Coast LEAF, BC Civil Liberties Association, Elizabeth Fry and Megaphone Magazine.
Sumra also speaks Urdu and has a working understanding of Hindi and Punjabi.
